Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: Why do schools using SIMS need this upgrade?

A: Schools need this upgrade in order to correctly run the next School Census, which takes place on Thursday 18 May 2017 and in preparation for Key Stage and End of Year procedures.

Q: What if my school does not subscribe to the ETS: SIMS & Microsoft Office support service?

A: If your school does not have an active subscription to our SIMS & Microsoft Office support service then you will need to contact whomever carries out your SIMS support to have the SIMS upgrade installed.

If you would like to subscribe to our SIMS & Microsoft Office support service then please contact us for a quote.

However if SIMS is hosted with a third party provider you will be have been contacted directly with a date.

Q: What do schools need to do to install the upgrade?

A: If your school subscribes to our SIMS & Microsoft Office support service (Service #17 in our Service Catalogue) then the following things will happen between now and Easter (16th April).

a) A member of the ETS team will email your school by 9:30 school on the day of your upgrade. 

b) The upgrade will begin at 16:30 on the day that the email is sent

c) if your school does not want the upgrade to take place on the day we contact you, don’t worry, please contact us to let us know by:

1) calling us on 01743 254230 or

2) emailing ets@shropshire.gov.uk

d) On the day of the upgrade, your staff will need to ensure they are not running SIMS on any computer from 16:15 onwards.

Q: Will staff need to log out of their computers while the SIMS upgrade is taking place?

A: No.

a) As long as you are not running SIMS, the upgrade will take place while staff continue to use their computers.

b) However in order for the upgrade to be successful, the computers running SIMS MUST NOT BE SWITCHED OFF OR RESET until 9:00 AM the following day.

Q: Do staff need to stay logged into the computers running that use SIMS?

A: No.  Provided the computers are powered on and SIMS is not running on them, they can be left at the “Login Screen” and the SIMS upgrade will still work.

Q: What if the upgrade fails?

A: The ETS team will monitor the status of all of the upgrades to ensure everything runs smoothly. 

If you run into any technical difficulties on the day of the upgrade, or indeed at any time then, provided your school has an active subscription to our SIMS & Microsoft Office support service then you can contact us between 8:00 - 18:00 (Monday to Thursday) and 8:00 – 16:00 (Fridays) to obtain help and support.

Q: Can a school contact ETS now to request a specific upgrade day?

A: YES!
