Important information advice for schools about the latest RansomWare attack.
Schools are warned to be extra vigilant after the outbreak of a new malware threat “Petya ransomware (also known as Petrwrap/PetyaWrap)”.
The threat is able to run on Windows machines where security software and specific patches have not been applied and kept up to date.
Schools are advised to:
- Ensure that any suspicious emails with attachments are not opened. especially from senders that you are not expecting mail from. Although the form of infection is not known at this stage.
- Do not respond to any emails asking you to clean up the threat – contact your IT support provider in the first instance.
- Ensure your network of Windows based machines are fully patched with Windows updates.
- Check that your machines have Sophos Anti-Virus installed (or your own security products) and that they are updating correctly.
Please contact your local technical support team if you have any concerns or for advice.
Any machines that are affected please turn them off and disconnect from the network - Immediately inform the IT services helpdesk on 01743 252200.
